Penn and Drexel anchor Philadelphia, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon anchor Pittsburgh, Penn State's campuses cover the middle, and a long list of private colleges from Swarthmore to Bucknell are in a campaign or planning one. The hospital systems on both ends of the state run their own foundations and hire gift officers too.
