Fort Valley State University has been in Fort Valley, Georgia since 1895 and holds three identities at once: a University System of Georgia institution, a historically black university, and an 1890 land-grant institution. It enrolled 2,905 students in 2024, on what the university notes is the second largest acreage of any Georgia university. Undergraduates can join faculty research from freshman year, in fields the university lists as cancer, brain science, food safety, and agricultural productivity among others.

Advancement runs through the FVSU Foundation and the alumni affairs office, raising money for a public land-grant HBCU of under 3,000 students, where the alumni base is a known community rather than an anonymous list.
